Announcement: Bluegrass at the Rock Concert Features Larry Sparks

Event NewsBMNN wrote: on Jan. 30, 2006:
Bluegrass at the Rock presents award winning "Larry Sparks" with special guest Les Deaton on Friday, February 17, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. The opening act will be the local group, "John Shuffler Band." The Old Rock School in Valdese, North Carolina has become well-known throughout the nation for its outstanding bluegrass concerts and Foothills Showcase has brought the Rock School to the Internet!

Larry Sparks is one of the few who has created a style of his own while remaining true to the best traditions of bluegrass. Larry began his career at the top of his profession when he worked with the Stanly Bros. and Ralph Stanley during the late 60’s. He formed the Lonesome Ramblers in 1969, and began a recording career that to date has produced many albums and has established him as one of the top names in Bluegrass. Larry’s style of singing and playing are among the most copied in bluegrass. Based on rock solid rhythm and with driving support from the Lonesome Ramblers, his guitar playing is legendary for his hot solos and "lonesome" instrumentals.

Furthermore, Larry’s singing, a highlight of the band, has earned him the reputation of "The Most Soulful Voice in Bluegrass." Credits like that only come with a high degree of talent, professionalism, and many long years of excellence. Come on out and see this legendary performer in person at the Rock School in Valdese.

Larry Sparks recently won the 2005 IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year Award. Bluegrass music is now almost 60 years old, and it has become clear that within the music there are only a small handful of major stylists. Larry Sparks is one of the few who has created a style while remaining true to the best traditions of bluegrass.

The following month on March 11, 2006, Bluegrass at the Rock will be presenting IIIrd Tyme Out. Success for IIIrd Tyme Out was nearly an overnight occurrence after its forming in 1991. Founding members Ray Deaton and Russell Moore left Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver to create a new tradition in modern bluegrass music. Joining these pioneers is Wayne Benson, formerly of Livewire, Steve Dilling from Lonesome River Band, Greg Luck from JD Crowe & The New South, and Donnie Carver.

As the saying goes, "The proof is in the pudding" and what more proof of the band's niche as a top bluegrass band than its seven consecutive IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) awards. The band won Vocal Group of the Year from 1994 through 2000. These awards stem from the band's acapella renditions of songs that cannot be matched and the band's superb musical talent. While most of their repertoire centers around the bluegrass and country songs of Bill and Charlie Monroe, the Delmore Brothers, The Carter Family, Hank Williams, and Jimmie Rodgers, the group has been equally effective with Gospel material. In fact, their 1996 album, "Living on the Other Side," was an all-Gospel recording.

IIIrd Tyme Out -- Where did such a name have its origin? This was the third time out for founding members Deaton and Moore and consequently the third professional bluegrass band association for each. No doubt, the third time proved to be the charm for these talented artists.

Foothills Showcase is a non-profit organization that supports and produces live music. Foothills Showcase produces weekly shows for the local radio station, WSVM, and the best bluegrass bands around come to perform in the building's 473-seat auditorium. Its office is in the west wing of the Old Rock School. Inside the office, Foothills Showcase owns a twenty-four track recording studio for radio projects, as well as demo projects for local bands. There is also a small PA system for rent.

Doors open at 6:00 pm – Valdese Old Rock School 400 Main St. West - Valdese, NC 28690
