 News: Amy Bell Receives Bluegrass Scholarship

Amy Bell was selected as this year’s recipient of the Willa Beach-Porter scholarship given by the Central Texas Bluegrass Association. The yearly scholarship is determined by the board of directors and the recipient attends a week-long bluegrass camp at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. South Plains College is known for their outstanding commercial music department. It is one of the few colleges in America that actually specializes in bluegrass and country music.


Bell, 14, plays in a small band at her local church and aspires to be a professional bluegrass musician upon graduation from South Plains College. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kim Bell of Bowie, Texas. She is the granddaughter of Bobby and Marylon Hendrickson of Benton. Her great-grandparents are Dan Clayton of Benton, the late Laverne Clayton and the late Sherman and Mae Eva Hendrickson.

Bell is a singer, fiddle and guitar player. She currently takes voice, fiddle and guitar lessons from Dale and Tobi Morris of Boyd, Texas.

"Amy was born to play music,” Dale Morris, champion fiddler, said. She will bring a wonderful reflection of our teachings to Camp Bluegrass."

Toby Morris added that "Amy is dedicated to her music. She constantly seeks to learn more, proving she is very passionate about her playing ability and strives to improve."
