Profile: Another Bluegrass Sound - Coolgrass from Australia

ProfileBMNN wrote: on Dec. 22, 2008:
CoolgrassHere's another bluegrass band to introduce you to -- Coolgrass. Coolgrass enjoys straight bluegrass, but prefer their bluegrass to be a bit bent. In addition to their own songs and parodies, Coolgrass tackle the likes of Mozart, Mancini, Chuck Berry, Queen, Duke Ellington and many more in a tongue-firmly-in-cheek bluegrass style. They're based in Melbourne (Australia, not Florida) and can be found causing musical mayhem at various folk and bluegrass festivals. They've been busy in the studio - their 2004 CD "Toad Rage" has recently been joined by a new recording: "Jaguar Breakdown" in honour of Jim's "reliable" old car.

Coolgrass, has been in many shapes and forms over the last 10 years or so. Originally starting as a five piece band, it immediately dwindled to a three piece including Jim Golding on banjo, Doug Wallace on guitar and Peter Hisco on double bass, and started getting gigs as a semi-serious outfit under the banner "Coolgrass, Rhythm and Bluegrass".

Unfortunately Peter Hisco left due to other commitments and then Michael Oakley came into the fray on double bass, as Coolgrass started to get more influences into their music from the jazz and classical spectrums. After some time, Bruce Packard, who had played bass with Jim and Doug on many an occasion during interstate festivals, moved to Melbourne and joined Coolgrass playing mandolin.

One of the events that Coolgrass became famous for was the Bluegrass and Old Timey Convention in Harrietville, Vic. In November each year, Coolgrass began to take a less serious look at the bluegrass genre by dressing up in weird and wacky outfits (including some intriguing hats) and tackling a plethora of different styles of music, not just your average bluegrass (somewhat to the disgust of the "Bluegrass Police"). Much of Coolgrass' reportoire came from working up many of these shows, and can be heard at any Coolgrass gig you go to.

In the last few years Jim's son, Angus Golding who did a lot of fill-in double bass work for Coolgrass over the years, officially joined the band, as Michael had other commitments to attend to. Since then Coolgrass has gone from strength to strength, making two cd’s "Toad-Rage" and “Jaguar Breakdown” and performing more than ever in various festivals and such.

Feel free to visit Coolgrass at geocities.com/coolgrassband or on MySpace at MySpace.com/Coolgrass. Coolgrass is Jim Golding (banjo, vocals), Doug Wallace (guitar, dobro, vocals), Angus Golding (double bass, vocals) and Bruce Packard (mandolin, vocals).
