New Release: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 'The Resurrection' Needs to be Heard

Written by Jeff Hanna's wife Matraca Berg and Alice Randall, "The Resurrection" actually was a song NGDB had "worked up a few years back," explains Hanna, "but it didn't really 'hook.'" "We all felt really strongly" about the song, adds Jimmie Fadden, NGDB's harmonica virtuoso, "but it sort of slipped into the background as it were. Maybe a little bit like the town in the song."

NGDB revisited "The Resurrection" when they started recording 'Speed of Life,' and with the help of producers George Massenburg and Jon Randall Stewart plus guest vocals from Berg, the song flourished. The "great tune about a small town trying to come back" (as Hanna describes its narrative) resonates loudly as an allegory about the nation's biggest cities and the entire country's irrepressible spirit.
"The Resurrection" "has a definite thing to say," elucidates NGDB's John McEuen. "Somehow it alludes to America, where we've come from, where we've been...a song that needs to be done."
