News: Roots and Vines Welcomes the Legendary Grandpa Banana to Sonoma

Event NewsBMNN wrote: on Oct. 12, 2009:
Grandpa BananaSonoma, CA -- Sleepy wine country is about to be awakened. "Slow-noma" will be a misnomer at 4PM on October 18th because renowned North Bay musician, David Thom, is launching a live music series called Roots and Vines, which is sure to rock any remaining fruit right off their vines. Attendees will be able to listen to some great roots music, enjoy a gourmet chicken dinner and sip wine in a breathtaking vineyard in Carneros.

Tickets are $30 (includes dinner and a glass of wine). The vineyard is located on East Bonness Road in the town of Sonoma. Attendance will be limited to 50 people, age 21 and over. The outdoor show will have festival seating, so blankets and low back chairs are a must! Visit www.rvsonoma.com for more information and to purchase tickets.

The first show will feature Grandpa Banana (www.GrandpaBanana.com). Banana began his career in bluegrass on the east coast in Boston with "Banana and the Bunch, Old Time Music with Appeal". After several years in the east coast folk scene, he formed The Youngbloods with Joe Bauer, Jesse Colin Young, and Jerry Corbitt. The band moved from New York City to West Marin in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1967. He also produced the first two High Country albums for Butch Waller in the early 1970's. He was accompanist to Mimi Farina for over twenty years, played keyboards and sang lead with Zero for over 10 years, played with Norton Buffalo, Steve Kimock and Friends and currently on a fairly regular basis, plays blues with The Michael Barclay Blues Band and old time psychedelic rock with The Barry "The Fish" Melton band. He has done duo gigs with David Nelson, Keith Little, David Thom, Paul Knight, and others. And he plays the beloved bluegrass music with friends and neighbors including The Papermill Creek Rounders, David, Tracy and Sam Grisman, The David Thom Band and the legendary Artie Rose and associates. He also does solo gigs mainly in Europe and the UK.

David Thom is the band leader and front man for The David Thom Band (www.TheDTB.com). Peter Thompson of KALW 91.7 FM in San Francisco hails, "They play hard-driving bluegrass, steeped in the tradition while tempered by contemporary sensibilities (which means they can get away with 'most anything they choose, while they maintain the soulful essence of the music). The band's delight in playing and singing their brand of bluegrass is infectious, and their performances are always Big Fun."
