Education: Pete Wernick Announces Winter Banjo Camp Scholarships

LearningBMNN wrote: on Nov. 03, 2009:
Dr., Banjo Pete WernickPete "Dr. Banjo" Wernick will offer several scholarships for his 2010 Winter Banjo Camps to deserving banjo pickers who would otherwise have difficulty affording it, thanks to some generous folks including Stelling Banjo and the Colorado Bluegrass Music Society (CBMS). The CBMS scholarship is open to Advanced or Intermediate players, and the recipient must be a member of CBMS. (To join CBMS, visit www.ColoradoBluegrass.org). The CBMS scholarship has a deadline of Nov. 14, 2009, for applications.

To apply for a scholarship, email Pete at Pete@DrBanjo.com or write to 7930-T Oxford Rd., Niwot, CO 80503. Include with your email or letter a sample recording (can be a computer file, tape or CD) which demonstrates your playing level. Applicants for the Advanced camp should include a recording of themselves playing in band context, preferably their current band if they have one. For visit http://www.DrBanjo.com and click on 'camps' link.

Renowned banjo player and teacher, Pete "Dr. Banjo" Wernick will offer his 25th Anniversary Winter Banjo Camps January, 2010 at the Boulder Inn in Boulder, Colorado. Each of the three "full immersion" weeks is geared to different experience levels. For complete information, visit www.DrBanjo.com

"My camps are about fun, but also about real results," says Wernick. "Having played and taught banjo most of my life, I still love to help players learn." In the words of one camper, "I had a blast. It's a great experience. 15+ hours per day of playing banjos, talking banjos, learning how to play banjos, watching videos of famous players and having Pete show you exactly what they're doing, working on perfecting licks, adding new licks, and jamming."

The 2010 Banjo Camps Schedule:

  • Jan 4-9: Basic Skills Banjo Camp
  • Jan 11-16: Intermediate Banjo Camp
  • Jan 18-23: Advanced Banjo Camp

Jan 4-9, 2010: Basic Skills. A friendly, "safe" situation for inexperienced and closet players. Includes: Creating basic solos, worked-out and improvised; Backup pointers and jamming etiquette; How to beat timing problems; Practice tips and standard licks. Lots of jamming, with everyone participating.

Jan. 11-16, 2010: Intermediate. For pickers who can work out their own solos, and have jamming experience. Includes: Good timing and tone; Creating 'believable' solos, improvising; Practicing for maximum progress; Clearing technical hurdles, gaining speed; Knowing the neck, favorite licks; Backup approaches and techniques.

Jan. 18-23, 2010: Advanced. The ONLY advanced banjo camp anywhere this year! For pickers who have played in performing bands. Includes: Getting "the pro sound"--timing, tone, 'believability'; Creating interesting solos, tunes, individual style, gaining speed; Practicing to clear technical hurdles; Bringing out the best in each song, backup and lead; Knowing the neck, creating licks; Performance skills--sounding your best on stage; Week includes a class performance with Pete at the Boulder Inn, in support of the Banjo Camp Scholarship fund.

Pete Wernick is renowned worldwide for his accomplishments and contributions to bluegrass music: the hot-picking force in several trend-setting bands including Hot Rize, respected author and teacher, songwriter, and long-term President of the International Bluegrass Music Association.
