New Release: Guthrie Legacy Continues With New Addition To Folkways Family Music Canon

Music NewsBMNN wrote: on Nov. 04, 2009:
Goo WaggalooOver 60 years after Folkways Records released Woody Guthrie's first children's/family music album in 1947, his granddaughter Sarah Lee Guthrie is ensuring the family's commitment to children's music and its longstanding collaboration with Smithsonian Folkways, the home of Folkways Records. Smithsonian Folkways recently released Sarah Lee Guthrie's first children's record and her first as a Smithsonian Folkways artist. 'Go Waggaloo' (October 27) by Sarah Lee Guthrie & Family is the next chapter in the Guthrie family canon and a continuation of the longstanding relationship between Smithsonian Folkways and the Guthries.

Smithsonian Folkways and Folkways Records before it have released over 200 different children's records in the past 61 years, and three of these recordings are from Woody Guthrie. Sarah Lee Guthrie, the granddaughter of America's most cherished and influential folk musician, is a noteworthy addition to this catalogue. Guthrie's 'Go Waggaloo' is a 13-track disc featuring her husband Johnny Irion, their two daughters, and a host of other family and friends including her father Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Pete's grandson Tao Rodriguez Seeger. The album also feature lyrics from Woody that were uncovered by Sarah Lee in the Smithsonian Folkways archives and have never before been put to music as well as eight songs written by Sarah Lee & family.

Woodrow Wilson Guthrie, perhaps the greatest folk song balladeer of the twentieth century, wrote more than a thousand songs between 1932 and 1952. The majority of Guthrie's commercial recordings were made for Moses Asch, founder of Folkways Records. Today, Guthrie's rich musical legacy, nourished by Smithsonian Folkways, continues to make the rounds, crossing cultural, social, national, and generational boundaries. Embodying the image of the western folk songsmith, Woody Guthrie is an American legend and his recordings are national treasures. His inspirational folk, western, children's, and social protest lyrics still influence musicians and audiences today.

Featuring a never-before seen original Woody Guthrie painting as cover art, 'Go Waggaloo,' bridges generations of music lovers as is spans generations of a family with one of the most lasting impacts on American music and culture.
