Announcement: Grammy Award Winner Ralph Stanley II Comes to Hughesville, MD

Event NewsBMNN wrote: on Nov. 11, 2009:
Ralph Stanley IIOn Sunday December 13, 2009, the Sons of the American Legion and Jay Armsworthy present the next Bluegrass music show of the season with Grammy Award winner Ralph Stanley II. Ralph II sets a new benchmark for traditional country music with the most recent release of This One Is Two on Lonesome Day Records. It showcases 11 emotionally probing songs by the best writers in the business, among them Lyle Lovett, Townes Van Zandt, Fred Eaglesmith, Tom T. Hall and Elton John and also including two of his very own original songs.

Ralph Stanley II is the son of mountain music immortal Ralph Stanley. For the past several years, he has distinguished himself as lead singer and rhythm guitarist for his father's Clinch Mountain Boys band. Called simply "Two" by family and friends, Stanley is now signed to Lonesome Day Records, on which his latest CD, This One Is Two.

Stanley began learning to play guitar when he was five years old. At about that same age, he occasionally started going on the road with his dad. He did not opt for a career in music, however, until he was 12. It was then that he chanced to see an old video of Keith Whitley performing with the Clinch Mountain Boys and decided that was what he wanted to do for life. In 1995, he became a full-fledged member of the band. From that moment forward, he has been earning his stripes, one show and one album at a time.

Stanley won a Grammy award for his work on the Jim Lauderdale/Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys album, Lost in the Lonesome Pines, and has been nominated for two other Grammys.

Critics have long praised Stanley's vocal chops and his encyclopedic knowledge of traditional rural music. His rich, resonant voice routinely inspires comparisons to George Jones and Merle Haggard. As lead singer for the Clinch Mountain Boys, Stanley fulfills the role earlier held by such revered stylists as Larry Sparks, Charlie Sizemore, the late Keith Whitley and, of course, his uncle Carter Stanley of the trailblazing Stanley Brothers. Like these predecessors, Stanley is as much at home performing classic country music as he is Bluegrass.

The show will begin at 2:00 pm with the doors opening at Noon. Tickets will be "ONLY" $15.00 per person. This will be a great show not to miss at this unbeatable price. For a separate price, a dinner special will be served before the show. We'll also have 50/50 raffles and CD door prizes. As always, Troy Jones will provide the sound.

If you'd like to order tickets just give a call to 301-737-3004. All pre- purchased tickets will be held at will call for pick up the day of the show. You can also go to our all new website for directions to the American Legion at www.AmericanLegionBluegrass.com.

Also non-perishable food donations will be accepted to help replenish the food banks in Southern Maryland.
