Announcement: BFOTM Hosts 'Battle of the Bands' on Friday, January 8th

Event NewsBMNN wrote: on Jan. 01, 2010:
The Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music will present an old-time "Battle of the Bands" with two excellent groups in concert, Uncle Henry's Favorites vs. Orpheus Supertones, Friday, January 8, 2010 at 8 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall, 420 Willa Road in Newark, Delaware, 19711 (near the UD campus)

Those old time music fans who attended the band finals at Clifftop this year noticed something unusual – two bands played the same tune, "Red Bird." Not only that, one band played it right after the other. In fact, in introducing the tune, Walt Koken of The Orpheus Supertones accused Uncle Henry's Favorites of having "stolen our tune." Strong words. Both bands played wonderful versions of the old Clark Kessinger tune, but when the dust settled, the Orpheus Supertones came out ahead of Uncle Henry's Favorites (the bands finished in third and fourth place respectively). Not content to let bygones be bygones, however, the two bands have agreed to resume the battle of the bands at a Brandywine Friends concert in Newark.

On Friday, January 8, 2010 at 8 p.m. the winter doldrums will be interrupted by the sounds of fiddles, banjos and other assorted instruments engaging in musical combat. The home court advantage goes to The Orpheus Supertones from nearby Avondale, PA. Consisting of Clare Milliner and Walt Koken on fiddles, Pete Peterson (and occasionally Walt Koken) on banjo, Kellie Allen on guitar and Hilary Dirlam on bass, the Supertones have won many contests and toured all over the country and in the United Kingdom.

Their worthy opponents, Uncle Henry's Favorites, hail from Charlottesville, VA, but one of their members, fiddler/guitar player Jim Childress, grew up in Claymont, DE. The others include Pete Vigour (fiddle, banjo and guitar) Ellen Vigour (mandolin) and Mark Beall (bass). The band was formed in 1985 and has performed their special brand of old-time music in their region and beyond continually since that time, and have even appeared on "A Prairie Home Companion."

Come join the fun on January 8, and may the best band win. Tickets at the door only: General Public $17; Seniors (62 & Over) $14; Members $12; Ages 17 & under FREE! For more information visit www.BrandywineFriends.org or call (302) 321-6466.
