News: The Crooked Road Named 2010 Distinctive Destination

Music NewsBob_Cherry wrote: on Feb. 05, 2010:
The Crooked RoadSouthwest Virginia's "Crooked Road" region has been named one of the 2010 America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. For ten years the National Trust has used the Dozen Distinctive Destinations program to highlight how historic preservation helps communities create a sustainable future and a strong economy through heritage tourism. The Crooked Road features mountain, old-time and bluegrass music from one end to the other.

"We're proud to share with the world what you no doubt already know" says Jonathan Romeo, Interim Executive Director, The Crooked Road: Virginia's Heritage Music Trail. He continues noting "that this 300-mile route through Virginia's Blue Ridge and Appalachian regions, winding through 10 counties, three cities, and 19 towns, offers heritage travelers a unique opportunity to (among other things) experience authentic mountain music in the region where it was born."

The National Trust for Historic Preservation named The Crooked Road -- a heritage trail linking towns and music venues in Southwest Virginia -- one of 2010's Dozen Distinctive Destinations during celebration and announcement at the Floyd Country Store, a favorite stop along the route.

"This is where America learned to be America," said Joe Wilson, co-founder of The Crooked Road and chairman of the National Council for the Traditional Arts. This region has also been the birthplace of a significant number of bluegrassand country music artists.

The Crooked Road joins 11 other great destinations on the 2010 list. And for the first time, the public will determine which of the 12 destinations will be the 2010 Fan Favorite. Starting today you can vote for your favorite city or town on this year's list. And when you vote, you can enter to win a complimentary two-night stay at any Historic Hotel of America (no purchase necessary).

You can vote as often as you'd like at www.PreservationNation.org/ddd from today through February 28 (open to legal residents of the U.S., 18 years of age or older).

We hope you'll take this opportunity to support Southwest Virginia's "Crooked Road" region with your vote. We also hope that you'll share the link with friends, colleagues and family who share your interest in experiencing America's authentic heritage when you travel for business or pleasure.

Please find attached a photo of the February 3rd Award Presentation at the Floyd Country Store in Floyd, VA.

You can read more here about the program and distinctive destinations on MSNBC and USA Today comments Romeo.
