News: The Grass Cats - #1 'A Good Way To Get The Blues'

Music NewsBMNN wrote: on Jul. 27, 2010:
A Good Way To Get The BluesFor the third consecutive month, North Carolina’s The Grass Cats have the number one song on the Bluegrass Unlimited National Bluegrass Survey. It is the title cut from their latest CD, A Good Way to Get the Blues, and has topped the charts in June, July, and August 2010. Bluegrass Music Profiles, another bluegrass music trade magazine, ranked the single #1 in the months of February, May, and July.

The song was written by the band’s mandolin player Russell Johnson and is the second #1 single for Johnson and The Grass Cats. The first #1 was “Bluegrass Man” in 2003. The Cat’s bass player Tim Woodall says, "We are very excited to have a song do so well on the national charts. Knowing that it has resonated with the bluegrass public all over the country is a huge thrill, especially when you consider the chart company we are keeping with such legendary performers as Del McCoury, Sam Bush and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.”

The CD, A Good Way To Get The Blues, is #4 on the Bluegrass Unlimited CD charts. August marks the tenth month it has held a spot on the national chart. The Grass Cats are in their fourteenth year of performing and this is their seventh record for North Carolina’s New Time Records. Other band members include Rick Lafleur on banjo, Steven Martin on guitar and vocals, and Chris Hill on fiddle.

The Grass Cats continue to entertain audiences with their exciting live performances and critically acclaimed recordings. Their shows feature lively foot-stomping fiddle and banjo music, bluegrass classics, tight vocal harmonies, acapella gospel quartets and chart-topping original songs. Though careful never to lose their traditional bluegrass footing, the Cats also perform cleverly arranged "covers" of songs from artists as diverse as Eric Clapton, Duke Ellington and Johnny Cash.

With a total of six CD's, their recording career has also been highly acclaimed with three of their CD's landing in the Top 10 on Bluegrass Unlimited's National Bluegrass Survey. Their 2002 release, "The Blues Are Back In Town," received a highlight review in Bluegrass Unlimited magazine and garnered the CATS a #1 single, "Bluegrass Man." The CD was also named to County Sales' Top 5 Traditional Bluegrass Recording list for 2002. For more information on the band, go online to: www.GrassCats.com.
