The Rosin Sisters: Sweet Sunny South

A comment was made when this CD was given to me that the artists were not sure it was pure bluegrass. After listening, that doesn’t matter. With 18 cuts, Sweet Sunny South shows that 3 good fiddlin’ friends with strong music histories can weave old country, Carter family tunes, gospel, Cajun, roots, Americana, and bluegrass into a great set of tunes. The CD opens with a traditional instrumental tune, Goin’ Down The Valley, with 3 fiddles weaving clear, strong lines. Cut 2, Single Girl, Married Girl, shows their vocal strengths and humor and keeps the rhythmic pace moving well before slowing down on cut 3 with a blues tune. While fiddling is the strong point for the Rosin Sisters, the acapella harmonies on Over In The Glory Land will bring chills to anyone listening with the volume up, which is recommended. The range of this CD is impressive with tunes from the Carters, Bill Monroe, Charlie Poole, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, and Norman Blake as well as 5 traditional tunes and a medley of 2 original tunes combined with traditional number. Guest contributors are brought in on mandolin, pedal steel, and guitar for the last 3 cuts and they make solid contributions. While it there are many strong cuts, the medley is a stand out for the original tunes and their excellent execution with fiddles sharing lead, backups, and harmonies in well-balanced proportions. The Recording Engineer for this CD was Bill Dudley with supplemental recording by Ann Whitley-Singleton and the main recording was done in 3 days in Ann’s home. Dudley is an experienced recording engineer and the CD is well-produced, with no engineering weakness or compromise in sound quality. Buy it from CD Baby through the Rosin Sisters website link at www.rosinsisters.com and you won’t be disappointed. (Southeastern Bluegrass Association CD Review)
