You piqued my curiosity and my googling skills. I thinks it's a bouzouki and not a mandolin

I am no expert when it comes to mandolins but I noticed this and I believe it is a mandola note: the long neck and low range tuning he is also not playing in chord shapes that fit a mandolin.

I'm not a mandolin expert either so I cheated. I googled the Smoothie song (you wouldn't believe how many hits there are) read and read and read and finally found a reference in a review on Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/This-Side-Nickel-Creek/dp/B000066TPM

Down in customer reviews, the first review by J. Ross states that the bouzouki is played in this song.

Then I googled bouzouki images, Chris Thile bouzouki and found that he plays mandolin, banjo and bouzouki

Since I'm new to mandolin, I also appreciated the chance to learn about these magnificent musicians

Not a mandolin...&...Not a bouzouki...Notice the strings...Not bouzouki...It is what they call an Octave Mandolin...Pretty much the same as a mandolin...BUT...About a fourth lower...

Sure appears to be an Irish Bouzouki to my eyes and ears.

it looks as early Gibson navy mandolins, but in mandola size. Not bouzuki, it is too short.

BluLu is partially correct. It is an octave mandolin, but they are not tuned a fourth lower. They are tuned an octave lower, hence the name Octave mandolin.
The one in the video appears to be a Flatiron.
