I have been authorized by Dr. Banjo (http://www.drbanjo.com./) to place this idea ‘out there’ for discussion and comment. We have a follow-up interview planned for when the general response to this idea has had a chance to ‘percolate’ out in the ether of cyberspace. Dr. Pete talks about his reasoning in detail for an idea whose time has come in the following interview:
A mid-June 2006 Conversation (Interview) with Steve Sikes-Nova on ‘Newgrass, Prog & More!’ Internet Radio on Live 365.com. 60+ minutes of Dr. Pete talking with Steve about his extraordinary current progressive bluegrass/Americana band Flexigrass, renaming the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and information on his exciting series of Banjo Camps this summer.
This interview is repeated every Friday/Saturday at 8:30 pm, 10:30 pm, and 12:00 am. All times EST (Eastern Standard Time) Check: http://www.live365.com/stations/virginiaprograsser/schedule/
for more details on this and many other interviews from the worlds of progressive bluegrass and progressive rock!
Best,
Steve Sikes-Nova

Note: You can hear the great vocalist/bassist John Cowan’s (New Grass Revival/The John Cowan Band) positive response to Dr. Pete’s call for the name change from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival to the 'Telluride Newgrass Festival' in my interview with John recorded later that same week in mid June, 2006. Check http://www.live365.com/stations/virginiaprograsser/schedule/

I've seen acts there that were neither Bluegrass or newgrass. How about "Music" festival? _________________ Mike Lawing

Rather than change the name, why not bring bluegrass back to the festival? Make it a big bluegrass festival again. Craig Ferguson could always have another festival -- a general music festival but, planet bluegrass (www.bluegrass.com) should have a bluegrass festival! _________________ Bob CherryCybergrass |

Sound's good to me Bob, but I understand his reasoning to broaden the fanbase. Monroe - Style Mandolin Camp is going great here on it's last day. We just sang Happy B'Day to Monroe and are starting the last class. Peace, Mike _________________ Mike Lawing

I agree with you Bob. There's no problem with having other music at festivals....just make it at other festivals. I have seen this same "problem" occurring at the annual Indiana Fiddlers Gathering (http://www.indianafiddlersgathering.org/) over the last few years. They are bringing in more and more types of other music (and there by less and less bluegrass) in order to appeal to a "larger" crowd. Unfortunately, they are slowly loosing their BG crowd. Some of us don't even bother to buy tickets to the stage shows any more - we would rather stay out in the camp grounds and jam...
Just my two-cents...

Hello folks, just in case you would like to attend an event this summer that is definately a "bluegrass" festival; consider attending ROMP on June 26-28th! More info and tickets at http://www.riverofmusic.org See you there! Mike Lawing _________________ Mike Lawing
