News: Georgia Native Among 2008 Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame Inductees

Music NewsBMNN wrote: on Oct. 21, 2008:
Fred Daniel/Randall Franks/ -- The sons of the late Georgia Music Hall of Fame member Fred Daniel (1925-2007) of the Sunshine Boys attended his induction into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame at Dollywood Oct. 9 in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Gary Daniel of Savannah, Ga. and Scott Daniel of Dublin, Ga. accepted the induction of one of gospel music's most flamboyant singers.

"This is a real thrill for our family," Gary said. "Our father was never happier than when he was on stage. He had a wonderful career."

Scott said when his Dad was singing his pain would just go away. "You (the people of gospel music) meant a lot in dad's life," he said.

The Dove Brother's Quartet appeared to honor Daniel singing "I Wanna Go There," a song Daniel popularized. McCray Dove created a memorable moment when he successfully imitated the Daniel's trademark jump in the air during a performance of "I Wanna Go There."

Fred Daniel's career covered practically all aspects of the entertainment world, Waller said. "Fred spent the early days of his career singing baritone with the Covington, Ga. based quartet, The Happy Four, formed by lifelong friend, Happy Edwards," he said "Fred left the Happy Four in 1949 and began his sixteen year tenure with one of the most versatile groups in the country, The Sunshine Boys."

During Fred's years with The Sunshine Boys, he appeared with the group in a number of Charles Starrett B-Western movies. The Sunshine Boys were pioneers in recordings beginning with transcriptions and moving all the way through to CD's, movies, and radio, performing on WSB Barn Dance in Atlanta and WWVA Wheeling Jamboree in the late 40s and early 50s, Waller said.

Daniel played a part in historic recordings including the million selling "Peace in the Valley" with Red Foley and hits such as "How Long Has It Been," "Satisfied," "Dig A Little Deeper," and "Remember Me." He joined the Blue Ridge Quartet in Spartanburg, S.C.

"Some of the best years for the Blue Ridge Quartet were with Fred, as his exciting style captured audiences on songs such as "I Wanna Go There" and "Somebody Touched Me," Waller said.

Daniel with the Sunshine Boys is a member of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame, and Grand Ole Gospel Reunion's Living Legend Award winner, Dub Taylor Award Winner, and Wheeling Walkway of Stars inductee.

Fellow Hall of Fame member Ed Wallace of the Sunshine Boys was also in attendance honoring Daniel's induction.

The other 2008 SGMA class of inductees are Polly Grimes, the late Herschel Lester, Squire Parsons, and the late Luther G. Presley, and Ray Dean Reese.

The Southern Gospel Music Association is a non-profit organization that maintains the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame, the only facility honoring this genre of music, for the historic preservation of the accomplishments of the music and its people. Museum hours match those of Dollywood. Donations are tax-deductible. Individuals and businesses may donate to assist with honoring inductees with special bronze plaques that are displayed in the Hall of Fame. For more information about the museum or its inductees, visit www.sgma.org.
