Profile: A New Twist to an Old Tradition

Music NewsBettyParrish wrote: on Feb. 04, 2009:
Stacy GrubbWest Virginians can take pride in their contribution and claim-to-fame in the popularity of bluegrass music that's been sweeping the nation for years. Today there's a new kid on the block with a familiar, yet different sound that is destined to spark positive network static. The following story validates this fact, again with West Virginia taking the honors.

Generations of talented musicians, singers and songwriters have mastered the technique of performing their music, not for self-acclaim, but out of pure love and enjoyment of the tunes they play. In listening to the lyrics of many songs, it is quite evident that the message can relate to a moment in the real world or just a figment of the creative writer's imagination.

Try and envision strong mighty winds sweeping across the hillsides of the majestic West Virginia Mountains with clouds dancing to the rhythm of bluegrass, country and gospel music – get the picture? Now, blend the strings and vocals of the melodious sound to the harmony perfected in true Appalachian style. This sequence of sound waves will ignite a magical combustion that is destined to explode like wildfire.

Welcome to a newly discovered world of music, featuring a new twist to an old family tradition, captured in the vocals and heartstrings of one talented young lady - 'Stacy Grubb'. Stacy resides in Beaver, WV with her husband, Jason and 4 year old delightful son, Elijah. Stacy's lifestyle reflects the full picture of family tradition with her Dad, Alan Johnston of Premier, WV, a well-known area musician/singer/songwriter who has nourished and encouraged Stacy's musical abilities since early childhood. Alan has a devoted following of fans for many years when performing together with his talented band, South 52. Stacy's sister, Jessi continues to be a big part of this musical family. In sharing the stage with her Dad since childhood, Stacy projects a genuinely comfortable and personable stage performance.

A Nashville studio recording was merely a dream, but today Stacy can attest to the fact, dreams do come true. To paraphrase one of Stacy's remarks: it was not just fate, but the fact that she was willing to stop, listen and obey the calling of a Higher Power that landed her in Nashville, TN at Hilltop Studio.

The West Virginia connection reaches to an even deeper level: the Producer of this recording session is a well-known native Camp Creek area – Ronnie Cochran. Many of Ronnie's close family and friends still reside in the area. Ronnie relocated permanently in 1992 to Hendersonville, TN. Since that time he has owned and operated a well-established and successful business, R.C. Productions. With years of experience in recording and publishing music for Grand Ole Opry artists, Ronnie continues to provide services in every aspect of the business for churches, groups and individuals.

A special memoir of note: Ronnie spent close to 20 years as band leader, harmony back-up singer and co-writer of 'He Sang The Songs About El Paso', a tribute to Marty Robbins, with Grand Ole Opry artist, Legendary Billy Walker, The Tall Texan. Ronnie produced Billy's Gospel CD, Precious Memories, and worked on many others during this time. This relationship developed into a friendship sealed with memories shared through the years on the road and off with Billy and his beautiful bride, Bettie. On May 21, 2006 Billy and Bettie, along with two of their band members, Danny Patton and Charles Lilly, Jr., also a WV native, were involved in a tragic auto accident when returning home to Nashville from an Alabama concert.

Reflecting back to the early years in West Virginia: at age 15, Ronnie began his first job at WHIS in Bluefield which led to his meeting Alan Johnston. This talented and unpredictable duo contributed their share and more to the music industry both in TV and radio as well as branching out and traveling with the late, Legendary Mel Street. Ronnie reflects back to the early days spent with Alan and the guys, playing music, laughing, joking and yes, road stories and others they can't reveal in print, all adding to the lighter side of life. On a more serious note, Ronnie is quick to point out what a humbling experience this has turned out to be: having known Alan since his teenage years in WV and now producing and recording at Hilltop Studio in Nashville, TN with Stacy, Alan's extraordinarily talented daughter.

The mystique surrounding Stacy's first time studio encounter, highlighted by the entertaining atmosphere in the room, was set to music in Nashville's Hilltop Recording Studio. John Nicholson, owner/engineer, provided a home away from home for Stacy, her family and new found friends from January 6th through January 9th. This is where two entirely different worlds collided when band members begin to arrive, providing a totally surreal encounter.

Following the after-effects of literally being star-struck, Stacy calmly took her place in the recording booth, awaiting Ronnie's cue to 'sing'. Speaking of reaching for the stars, Ronnie did just that in charting arrangements for this project, check out this line-up. Joel Key-Session Band Leader, Rob Ickes, Aubrey Haynie, Brent Mason, Wayne Killius, Gary Prim, Timmy Carter and back-up harmony - Ron Block, Dailey & Vincent. Alan played bass on two of these cuts, Hurricane and Once Upon A Cross, which were composed by Alan several years back. Yes, Stacy became a bit teary-eyed when seeing her Dad taking part in the Nashville studio recording session, standing by her side - truly, a dream come true for both.

The week was spent working a few 10 hour days, but with no visible blood, sweat or tears to show any signs of fatigue whatsoever. The band members worked endlessly and being the professionals they were, every chord was to perfection – Nashville style. Should one get the impression that it was all work and no play – wrong! To satisfy every appetite, a daily morning run was made by Krispy Kreme – Hot Sign specials delivered with countertops and studio lounge serving coffee and drinks, along with coconut balls, snacks and other goodies brought in by friends. The grand finale came at midday when John Nicholson graciously escorted everyone to various nearby restaurants that served the most delicious home-cooked food ever! A week of sweet dreams in more ways than one!

To summarize: Stacy projects a fresh, somewhat different new sound, yet her talent and familiarity with tradition comes alive in every song. Stacy's outgoing personality and humorous, unpredictable outbursts adds laughter and charm, defining the unique character of this exceptional young lady. Stacy focused all her attention on this project simply because she lives, breathes and loves performing her music, her way - with little thought given to the commercialism involved. This recording project is scheduled to be completed in late February with the prediction of one to follow in the very near future – stay tuned.

The master quality sound engineered by John Nicholson, Hilltop Studio, intermixed with years of professional stage and studio experience - Producer, Ronnie Cochran, R.C. Productions, and session band members mentioned above, Stacy's new CD is destined to attract positive attention from every realm of the music business and beyond.
