From the Labels: Grascals Debut CD to Feature Bobby Osborne and Dolly Parton

New ReleasesRounder wrote: on Dec. 17, 2004:
Dolly Parton comments on the bluegrass musicians The Grascals self titled debut CD set to be released February 8th saying, "I am so proud of The Grascals," says Parton. "They are one of the best bluegrass bands I've ever heard. They are all so very talented as vocalists and instrumentalists. Their new CD is one of the greatest albums I've ever listened to."

In addition to opening Parton's Hello, I'm Dolly arena tour, The Grascals make up part of the band that backs her during her set each evening. The tour began in October in Greenville, SC, and has included stops along the East Coast, the Midwest and Texas, and is winding its way through Nevada, California and the Pacific Northwest (remaining tour dates are listed below). Each night The Grascals have the incredible opportunity to perform for thousands of Parton's fans, introducing a whole new audience to their own brand of hard-driving, precision musicianship and spine-tingling vocal harmonies.

The band's debut single is "Viva Las Vegas," a bluegrass rendition of the Elvis Presley classic, recorded as a duet with Parton. It debuted at #3 on Billboard's country singles sales chart, due in large part to the number of people flocking to meet the band and buy the CD after each night's performance.

The Grascals encompasses a wide-ranging blend of traditional songs ("Sweet By and By," "My Saro Jane," "Sally Goodin") and originals, some of which were written by the group's members. Guitar player/vocalist Jamie Johnson co-wrote "Mourning Dove" and "Where I Come From," while banjoist/vocalist David Talbot composed the instrumental "Bevans Lake Crossing." Nashville tunesmith Harley Allen contributed the emotional coming-of-age tale "Me and John and Paul," while hit songwriter Roger Murrah wrote "Where Corn Don't Grow," initially recorded by Travis Tritt. Along with plenty of precision picking, the CD features tight vocal harmonies and pays tribute to the group's heroes, including Bobby Osborne, who sings on "Some Things I Want to Sing About" and plays mandolin on the Osborne Brothers' "Leavin's Heavy on My Mind."

Given the individual musical backgrounds of The Grascals' members, it's no surprise that their debut CD pays tribute to tradition in a way that will appeal to hard-core bluegrass aficionados as well as fans of classic and progressive country music. And given the common ground of their past work experience-their paths crossed and re-crossed in groups including the Osborne Brothers, Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time, the Sidemen and Parton's Blue-niques--it's no surprise that the CD is seamless and cohesive in its flow.

The Grascals are: Terry Eldredge on lead vocals and guitar, Jimmy Mattingly on fiddle, David Talbot on banjo and vocals, Jamie Johnson on guitar and vocals, Danny Roberts on mandolin and Terry Smith on bass. While the group was officially formed within the last year, its members have had years of experience touring and recording with a wide range of country and bluegrass artists, including Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Larry Cordle & Lonesome.

Standard Time, Lonzo & Oscar, The Osborne Brothers, Jimmy Martin, Gail Davies, Mike Snider, Steve Wariner, Rascal Flatts and Dierks Bentley.
