Education: The Bass 'Strummit' with Jason Moore, Mike Conner, Jerry Fretwell

LearningBMNN wrote: on Nov. 16, 2009:
Looking for the perfect Christmas gift for your bass player? Well, we've got it for you. (for those of you who want "just the facts", skip to the bottom of this post for basics & fees) On January 2nd, 2010, you can send them to The Bass "Strummit" in Roanoke VA. The workshop will be led by none other than Jason Moore (link to the right of this page to Jason's site), bassist with Mountain Heart, and assisted by Sandy Ridge bass man Mike Conner. In addition, Jerry Fretwell of Fretwell Bass of Staunton (see the link to Jerry's site to the right of this page under "Links") will host a care/repair clinic for your bass, offering advice on repair, set up, and general care for your instrument, and individual inspection of your URB.

We'll be hosting the workshop event in beautiful downtown Roanoke Virginia, inside the Mill Mountain Theater Atelier. Overnight rooms are available in the Atelier, which serves as temporary quarters for the many actors and actresses who've graced the stage at Mill Mountain Theater. The Atelier is located directly across the street from the newly opened Taubman Museum of Art in the historic Shenandoah Hotel building, right in the heart of Downtown, where unique shopping, dining, and entertaiment abound (so there's plenty to do for those of you who might not be bass-centered like the rest of us!).

The workshop will provide 6 hours of instruction, covering all skill levels from beginner to the advanced player, and will offer advice on "pulling" tone, left & right hand technique, timing (front, top, and back beats), percussion licks on the fretboard, pick-ups and amplifiers, practice tips, pre-playing exercises, tasteful backup, and "less is more" theory.

Overnight rooms will be available for both Friday & Saturday nights (Jan 1st & 2nd, 2010) and must be booked and paid in advance along with class tuition fee. Rooms are either single or double occupancy and are very limited, and will be booked first come, first served. Rooms are $55 per night, and are very nicely appointed. Please be advised that these are dormitory-styled rooms, and bath/shower facilities are not in each room, however they are separate and private for men & women (handicapped accessible). Kitchen facilities are also available should you wish to bring and prepare your own meals (you would be sharing those facilities with others in the class) and coolers or prepared food are welcome in your rooms. That said, with all the varied meal choices available just one block from the Atelier, we recommend that you "travel light" and sample fare as far afield as Thai, Indian, Mexican, Irish, Brazilian, seafood, and just about anything else you can imagine less than 500 feet from your door!

JUST ANNOUNCED, D'ADDARIO STRINGS IN SPONSORSHIP SUPPORT OF THE BASS STRUMMIT WILL PROVIDE EACH OF OUR STUDENTS WITH ONE FULL SET OF HELICORE 3/4 MEDIUM TENSION DOUBLE BASS STRINGS, VALUED AT $162.00 !!!!!!!!! (Please be advised that this workshop is limited to the first 20 students to sign up)

A Welcoming Reception from 5 to 7 PM with light refreshments will be held on Friday night (Jan. 1st) for those arriving to stay overnight with us for the class the next day, and we'll offer some advice on downtown attractions, museums, and restaurants. Early arrivals will also get "first dibs" on bass "stuff" from our various sponsors. ALL STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE ONE SET OF d'ADDARIO HELICORE 3/4 MEDIUM TENSION DOUBLE BASS STRINGS VALUED AT $162. All rooms must be booked and paid in advance (sorry, no refunds) and space is VERY LIMITED and will be booked first come, first served.
