Steep Canyon Rangers: One Dime at a Time

Rebel Records has just produced a great album by the Steep Canyon Rangers. "One Dime at a Time" is a fresh style of bluegrass that also contains some fresh material. With song titles like Big Cypoophus, you know you are going to hear some music that is beyond the norm. It is always a pleasure to hear something new but when I heard some honky-tonk country bluegrass in the title song, One Dime at a Time, I knew this album deserved greater attention. This band isn't afraid to experiment and, unlike many other bands, this band has the talent to make it work.

From a traditional sound to a jazzy sound and just about everything in between, the Steep Canyon Rangers are entertaining without deviating from what makes bluegrass music bluegrass.

The pronounced fiddle work runs throughout this collection. Waiting to Hear You Call my Name has a Texas style fiddle while Hold On has a more "acoustic" style. The more traditional sound is found on songs like Evangeline and I'll Be Long Gone.

If you put limits on your bluegrass, this album is likely to shatter your preconceptions. If you thought country music has lost it's country sound, well then, "One Dime at a Time" may restore your belief that the music is not only there but, very much a live.
