Open Road: Lucky Drive

There are some who believe that bluegrass music can only come from the hills of Kentucky or the mountains of Virginia. Open Road proves that isn't necessarily the case. Based along the front range of the Rocky Mountains, this band's latest album is another collection that proves the traditional sound of bluegrass music is in good hands. With a bit of old-time, a dash of traditional mountain music, a solid bluegrass base and the right chef, this blend of bluegrass music will easily please the hard-line traditionalists as well as those who prefer a more "modern" bluegrass sound. Take a turn down "Lucky Drive" with Open Road and you'll certainly hear some fine bluegrass tunage!

"Lucky Drive" is just that -- Drive! Listen to Mule Train churn up and clippity clop along through some great instrumental work. Little Rabbit spins out a bit of old-timey sound but still has that solid bluegrass sound. The full round of traditional sound comes through with a blast on Shotgun and it just keeps getting better. Caleb Roberts' mandolin is always fast, light and bright. Bradford Lee's solid guitar is never over-powering and played with the right touch of emphasis. Keith Reed's banjo shows off the wide range of styles that is a trademark of Open Road. Eric Thorin plays bass with a subtle artistry that binds all of the band together nicely. Paul Lee provides great fiddle throughout the album. The band's vocals are nicely harmonized and appropriate for each song. Everything is arranged to produce a sound that both pleasurable and entertaining.

To appreciate the breadth of this album, you'll need to listen to Wanderin' Blues for a slower tune. Roustabout picks up the pace a bit. Rollin On and After Dark show off the vocal abilities with a sound that pierces the soul. Open Road's "Lucky Drive" is good luck for all of us to enjoy.
