Lyons, CO -- This Sunday evening (September 9) Planet Bluegrass will open their 2012 fall concert series with 2 favorites from recent RockyGrass and Folks Festivals at the Wildflower Pavillion.
Virtuosic young mandolinist / singer / songwriter Sierra Hull has been called a "prodigious talent" (New York Times) and "a beautiful and talented gift to this world" (Dolly Parton). Though just 20 years old, Sierra has already performed at Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry, and The White House (with her mentor Alison Krauss); released 2 albums on Rounder Records, both debuting in the top 5 of Billboard's Top Bluegrass Albums chart (including last year's wonderful Daybreak); and received 5 IBMA nominations including "mandolin player of the year."
Sierra hull is the rare young musician able to take the spark of wonder that first inspired her to cradle an instrument and cultivate it to full blown virtuosity. Sierra came to nationa attention before her teens, appearing on the Great High Mountain Tour with Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs. Now 20 years old, Sierra's flawless instrumental technique has emerged as just one facet of her well-rounded musical intelligence, which she continued to develop as a Presidential Scholar at Berklee College of Music. On-stage, she never overplays, never overwhelms the emotion at the core of the song. Her vocals are disarmingly tender and eloquent, yet delivered with confidence and honestly.
Music can go beyond the lyrics and chords when it deeply resonates within us. A husband and wife duo that met over 20 years ago through music, they sing with simple accompaniment of guitar and clawhammer banjo. In doing so their fluid harmonies and songwriting are able to take center stage. Along with an easy going stage presence that leaves space for deep listening, Anne and Pete invite the audience to be part of a music experience. Less than a decade since they released their first album, the Sibleys’ music hit the national spotlight in 2009 with a blue ribbon finish in the “Great American Duet Sing Off” on NPR's A Prairie Home Companion.
Sierra and her band Highway 111 are joined in the Wildflower Pavilion this Sunday by the soaring voices and transcendent harmonies of Anne & Pete Sibley. Winners of A Prairie Home Companion's "Great American Duet Sing-Off," Anne & Pete nearly sold-out the Wildflower Pavilion on their own in May 2010.
