Joe Bevins, The Tower Street Stringband Featured at Heartwood

Joe BevinsThe Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail proudly presents a Youth Music Series concert on Thursday, December 13th at 6:00 p.m. at Heartwood: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Gateway. The concert will feature the Tower Street Stringband. The Crooked Road Music Series features youth music performers, as well as showcasing venues of the Crooked Road region. Heartwood features open jams on the 1st, 3rd, (and 5th) Thursday of every month. A complete schedule for the music series is available on The Crooked Road website at

The Tower Street Stringband is an old time mountain music band from Tazewell, VA. This family band includes father, Phil Bevins, on the fiddle; mother, Teressa Bevins, on doghouse bass; 14 year-old son, Joe Bevins, on claw hammer banjo & guitar; and 3 year-old daughter Kathleen Bevins, in dance and song.

The band has been playing for many years now and has been featured at venues and festivals throughout Southwest Virginia and beyond. They enjoy performing the high stepping, flat footing, foot stomping, dance tunes along with slow ballads and gospel songs. This performance at Heartwood will feature special guests Shawn Mann on mandolin and vocals and Gene Hensely on guitar and vocals.

The music series is sponsored by The Crooked Road, Heartwood, Appalachian Regional Commission, Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Admission to the concert is free and donations will be accepted for The Crooked Road Traditional Music Education Program (TMEP).
