James had this to say about the downloadable album, “I am so excited about all our plans for celebrating 20 years of playing bluegrass in 2013. Making this album available as a free download is a great way to kickoff our Coast-to-Coast tour. This album originally was released nationwide on a well-respected bluegrass label in 2001 and is now out of print so digital download was a great way to let people hear some of our music that they may have missed.”

The CD features several original songs including “Coal Dust in My Soul” written by James Reams which was used in the film “Wake Up West Virginia” about mountaintop removal. Other originals include the title track “Barnstormin’”, “The Cincinnati Southern”, “Dogwood Tree”, “Buffalo Creek Flood”, “Birch Brook Exit”, and “Kentucky River”.

Here are a few of the comments from reviewers of the CD:

“[James Reams sounds] as smoky as his heroes: Lester, Carter, and Red.”
~ Banjo Newsletter
“James’ voice has that silky quality that keeps you mesmerized…”
~ KCBL Radio, Backroads Bluegrass
“Ream’s commanding voice takes the listener all the way back to Kentucky,
with an unaffected Monroe-style quality that bends to
capture the mood of each selection.”
~ Sing Out! Magazine
“The Barnstormers are a thoroughly traditional bluegrass band;
their original tunes and well-selected older pieces make no accommodations for modern sounds — a plus!”
~ Bluegrass Unlimited

Everyone who truly loves this music should want to hear the stories from not just the big names in our business but from the likes of Bill Yates, Art Stamper, Melvin Goins, and Kenny Baker…words preserved now in this documentary, honoring their legacy. “Making History with the Pioneers of Bluegrass Music” proves that their lives are no less important to how bluegrass got started than the major stars.
