Thin Red Line is the second album of all-original material from the Northern California Central Valley band, Red Dog Ash. The group's signature harmonies and hot licks are refined on this effort, supporting carefully crafted lyrics that image Californias histories, geographies, and people. From family demons to the beauty of the Sierra Nevada, from migrant workers to lost souls, from the strength of convictions to homespun gospel, the CD thematizes the turning points that reshape the landscapes of our lives. It also pays homage to the banjo greats of bluegrass music and showcases both the drive and sensitivity of bluegrass picking. Thin Red Line shows Red Dog Ash to be a strong, clear, and original sound on the contemporary bluegrass scene.
Tonight at the Stage 3 Theatre Company, 208 S. Green St., Sonora, CA 95370, Red Dog Ash will hold their CD Release Party to introduce Thin Red Line to the public.
Red Dog Ash is the product of uncontrolled coal fires. It conjures images of coal mining and hot burns, hard work and honest existence, life and death heating up and cooling down. And by extension it solicits associations with family and land, love and loss, hope and despair, tragic pasts and new startsthat is, everything we care about, everything that bids the muses an invitation to drop in and set to song. That's why we took Red Dog Ash for a name, found it fitting for our original neo-traditional music so clearly rooted in bluegrass, but friendly with the wider sounds of folk, country, gospel, blues, and the new acoustic genre. Red Dog Ash plays original and classic bluegrass music, hard-driving tunes and beautiful waltzes featuring tight harmonies, hot licks, and high-lonesome mountain soul.
