California Film Festival Screening of "Making History with Pioneers of Bluegrass"

Pioneers of Bluegrass MusicThe line-up for the 7th Annual NCBS and International Bluegrass Music Museum’s Bluegrass on Broadway Film Festival held in Redwood City, CA has been announced and “Making History with Pioneers of Bluegrass” made it!

Hosted by James Reams, this film is a true labor of love that preserves stories from over 40 early bluegrass musicians who helped pave the way for so many modern day performers of Americana music. James will be at the event to answer questions, tell some of the back stories, and talk about what it was like to put this film together.

The film festival, which features both new independent films as well as films from the IBMM’s Oral History Project Collection, will be held at the Redwood City Main Library, 1044 Middlefield Road, Redwood City. For 2014, the festival has been expanded and will run on two concurrent Sundays. This is the perfect opportunity to grab a front row seat for bluegrass films that may get lost in the shuffle at your local cinema. And it's all FREE!

For the first time ever, a foreign film featuring bluegrass has been submitted for an Academy Award. "Broken Circle Breakdown" is the Best Foreign Language Film entry from Belgium. Because of the film's rating, the screening at the Bluegrass on Broadway film festival will require anyone under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The film will be shown on January 19th at noon. Other films that will be screened that day include:

  • The Story of Banjo Dan & The Midnight Plowboys - Paul Gittelsohn (VT)
  • The Whiskey Rebellion Live in Oregon - Tony Morin (NC)
  • The Making of Pa’s Fiddle - Tom Neff & Claire Bratten, Middle Tennessee State University (TN)

The following Sunday, January 26th will include these independent films:

  • Making History with Pioneers of Bluegrass - James Reams, Mountain Redbird Music (AZ)
  • The Tao of Bluegrass: A Portrait of Peter Rowan - Christine Funk, South 40 Films & Floating Records (CO)
  • Herschel Sizemore: Mandolin in B - Rick Bowman, Backyard Green Films (CA)

A special presentation film, “Peter Feldman: 50 Years in the Bluegrass” will be shown as part of the Northern California Bluegrass Society Awards Show on Saturday, January 25th at Veterans Memorial Senior Center, Redwood City.
