Bean Creek Named Best Bluegrass Band At 2014 NCBS Bluegrass Awards

Bean Creek Bluegrass BandBean Creek from Santa Cruz was named Best Bluegrass Band at the 2014 Northern California Bluegrass Awards held in Redwood City on January 25. The 7th annual ceremony was presented by the Northern California Bluegrass Society as part of the Bluegrass On Broadway Festival.

The Bean Creek band’s lead singer Billy Pitrone (Santa Cruz) won Best Male Vocalist and band members Pete Hicks (Aromas) and Rob Horgan (Santa Cruz) won Best Mandolin Player and Best Banjo Player, respectively. Hicks also performs with The Central Valley Boys, while Horgan is also a member of Sidesaddle & Co.

Voters named A. J. Lee of Tracy Best Female Vocalist, Glenn Dauphin of Oakland Best Guitar Player, and Mark Wardenburg of Palo Alto Best Fiddle Player. The Best Bass Player award went to Lisa Burns (Mountain View), while Kathy Barwick (Grass Valley) was named Best Dobro Player.

Lifetime Achievement Honors were bestowed upon four longtime music teachers: Bill Evans of Richmond, Steve Palazzo of Santa Cruz, Jack Tuttle of Palo Alto, and Lee Anne Welch of Saratoga.

Principal financial support for the Northern California Bluegrass Awards and the Bluegrass On Broadway Festival comes from the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission, the Redwood City Department of Parks Recreation and Community Services, the Redwood City Public Library, and John Dabney.
