Fiddle player Wil Markham of Signal Mountain, Tenn. was selected as one of the 2014 winners. Markham is the son of Skip and Harriet Markham of Signal Mountain, Tenn. He is the grandson of Wilbourne and Delores Markham and Phil and the late Stuart Wilkerson.

Paddy Montgomery wins 2014 Australian Youth Bluegrass Scholarship

Paddy is the recipient of the 2014 Australian Youth Bluegrass Scholarship. He will receive a $1500 cash grant from the Davidson Brothers as well as a recording package from Pacific International Music. At 25 years old, the South Australian musician has established himself firmly as one of the finest mandolin players we have ever seen in Australia. He discovered Bluegrass Music through attending many folk festivals around Australia in his teens and cites Sam Bush (USA) as his biggest inspiration on the mandolin.

The events help fund the organization’s Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholarship. Pearl and Floyd Franks are the late parents and former entertainment managers of actor/entertainer Randall Franks, "Officer Randy Goode" from TV's "In the Heat of the Night." The scholarships honor students excelling in the Appalachian musical arts.

Pete says, “It's good to see local kids learning the local music, and we're very glad to be able offer them this additional opportunity.”

Pete Wernick Announces 2013 Banjo Camp Scholarship Winner

Jacob PanicThe Stelling Banjo Scholarship to Pete (“Dr. Banjo”) Wernick’s Advanced Banjo Camp has been awarded to 26 year-old multi-instrumentalist Jacob Panic, of Baltimore, Maryland. Already a talented banjo player, singer, and songwriter, Jacob aspires to a career in bluegrass music and has recorded an album of original songs on which he plays all the instruments. Reflecting on the award, Jacob says, "I'm humbled and grateful to Pete and Stelling. Pete Wernick is one of my banjo heroes."

The scholarships honor students excelling in the Appalachian musical arts. The scholarship was awarded to Cody Harvey, 18, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee who graduated from Signal Mountain High School and plans to attend University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

IBMA Bluegrass Scholarship Prize - Deadline Extended

IBMAThe International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) is pleased to announce the first annual IBMA Bluegrass Scholarship Prize. A cash award of $100 will be announced at the IBMA Award Ceremony, and presented to the developing scholar who presents the best paper on an aspect of bluegrass music at a juried academic conference within the timeframe of January 2010 - July 2011. "Developing academic scholars" are graduate students in MA or Ph.D. programs, or individuals whose advanced degree was conferred within the last five years.
