Carter Fold Hosts Kilby Spencer & the Crooked Road Ramblers Sat

Crooked Road RamblersHiltons, VA -- The Crooked Road Ramblers play traditional old time dance music from the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. Members of the band are Kilby Spencer on fiddle, John Perry on guitar, Peco Watson on clawhammer banjo, Donald Hill on guitar and vocals, Wayne Dye on mandolin, and Karen Carr on bass and vocals. Most of the band are second and third-generation musicians who now play old time mountain music influenced by their families and communities. Saturday, September 6th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a special concert by Kilby Spencer & the Crooked Road Ramblers. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free.

Tim White & The VW Boys and Friends at Fold Tonight

The VW BoysHiltons, VA -- Tim White is the banjo picker, guitar picker, and baritone singer for the VW Boys. He knew Dave Vaught for several years prior to both of these gentlemen forming the VW Boys band which features bluegrass music, magic, and comedy in one self-contained variety show. Fat Albert Blackburn is the third leg of the VW Boys and plays upright bass and sings lead. Dave Vaught is an excellent entertainer and magician who brings his talents to the group as well as playing guitar and singing lead and harmony parts. The VW Boys will provide plenty of dance music for the cloggers and flatfoot dancers at the Fold by having Kevin Jackson accompany them on fiddle. Glen Harlow will also sit in as the group’s mandolin player. Saturday, August 30th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by the Tim White and the VW Boys and Friends. Carter Fold to Present Kody Norris & the Watauga Mountain Boys

Kody NorrisSaturday, August 23rd, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of traditional bluegrass music by Kody Norris and the Watauga Mountain Boys. Kody Norris is young, confident, and bluegrass proud. He’s been fronting his own band now for over nine years, but he’s been playing bluegrass music for much longer. Kody grew up in Mountain City, Tennessee. According to Norris, playing bluegrass in the traditional style is the only way he knows how to play it – or wants to play it.

Special Carter Fold Presentation with Barter Theatre - "Ring Of Fire"

Ring Of FireWednesday, August 27th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will partner with Barter Theatre to present Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash. Admission to the show is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors over 65, and $12 for children under 16. Tickets may be purchased in advance through Barter Theatre or at the door the night of the show. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Larry Efaw & the Bluegrass MountaineersThe spark the Bluegrass Mountaineers ignite while performing traditional bluegrass music is very unique. Their burning desire (fueled by their experience and music shared by four generations to continue a family tradition) is one of the world’s most valued treasures in such a wonderful music style. The fourth generation of the Bluegrass Mountaineers, Chris Wilcox is eager to learn the instruments at the young age of eight years old. In a quest to carry on the traditional bluegrass sound, the Bluegrass Mountaineers combine old time claw hammering, classic country yodeling, and twin fiddles to showcase their unique style. All members of the Bluegrass Mountaineers take turns demonstrating their vocal and instrumental abilities. Their love for the traditional, genuine bluegrass sound is evident every time they take the stage. Saturday, August 16th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert by Larry Efaw and the Bluegrass Mountaineers. 9-Year Old “Fiddlin’ Carson Peters" at Carter Fold Saturday

Carson PetersHiltons, VA -- Nine-year old Carson Peters, or “Fiddlin’ Carson Peters,” as he is becoming known, is a true musical prodigy. He is quickly making a name for himself with his fiddle by winning competitions and entertaining audiences across the region. Carson lives with his parents, Jamie and Robin Peters, in Piney Flats, Tennessee. They noticed at a very early age that he could keep time with any tune being played by clapping his hands or tapping his feet. His special talent for music became apparent after he taught himself to play “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” at the ripe opld age of two on a ukulele that his grandmother bought him. Footstompin’ Friday Features Raymond & Ruth McLain and Friends

Raymond McLainHiltons, VA -- The McLain Family Band began performing at Carter Music Center when Janette Carter first began presenting concerts in the old A.P. Carter Grocery in 1974. Raymond McLain, Sr. formed the family band in the late 1960s when his five children were very young. Mr. McLain was a Carter Family Memorial Music Center board member from the day the center was created. His son Raymond now serves on the Music Center’s board of directors in addition to serving as the Artistic Director at the Fold. Raymond is Director of the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music at Morehead State University. He also performs, produces, and records. Friday, August 8th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by Raymond and Ruth McLain and Friends as part of our Footstompin’ Friday series. Backing them up will be some of Kentucky’s finest musicians. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free.

Kickstart Carter Family Fold 40th Anniversary TV Special

Carter Family Fold 40th AnniversaryOn Monday July 28, 2014, a new Kickstarter crowdsource funding campaign will launch to fund the production of a half-hour television special celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Carter Fold located in Hiltons, VA - a rural non-profit music venue created to honor the musical heritage of the Carter Family - widely recognized as the First Family of Country Music. The campaign ends Tuesday August 26, 2014. The Kickstarter campaing needs fan support to get going.

Back Step Old Time Band at Carter Fold Saturday

Back Step Old Time BandHiltons, VA -- Backstep performs old time stringband music in the “Round Peak style” native to Mount Airy, North Carolina. Known for its driving rhythms and prominent melodies, Round Peak music is just the thing to make you kick up your heels and dance. Back Step features Chester McMillian (a founding member of the band) on guitar and his son Nick McMillian on fiddle (he also plays banjo and bass). Grayson Highlands BandThe Grayson Highlands Band, from the Jefferson, North Carolina area, plays a variety of old time music, ranging from rousing fiddle tunes to traditional songs and ballads. They are regulars at the Christmas in July Festival, the Albert Hash Festival, the Rugby Fall Festival, the Greater Lansing Area Festival, and the Wayne Henderson Festival. They have also been the guest band on the Gary Poe Live radio show several times, and have won numerous awards at regional fiddlers’ conventions. Tyler WilliamsHiltons, VA -- Tyler Williams grew up in Ohio and moved to Johnson City, Tennessee, to study bluegrass music. Ashley Davis is from Fayetteville, North Carolina. When the two of them met at the Galax Old Time Fiddlers Convention in 2007 it wasn’t long before they teamed up to form a band.
