Abingdon Crooked Road Music Fest 2014Abdingdon, VA -- It's coming and its coming as fast as it can down Virginia's Crooked Road and, its headed for Heartwood in Abdingdon, Virginia. Scheduled for September 25 through 28, 2014, the Abingdon Crooked Road Music Festival will come to life for four days of great bluegrass, old-time and gospel music.

UVa-Wise Bluegrass BandAbingdon, VA -- The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail presents a Youth Music Series concert on Thursday, May 8th, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Heartwood: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Gateway in Abingdon, Virginia. The concert will feature the UVa-Wise Bluegrass Band from Wise County.

3rd Annual Crooked Road Youth Music Festival May 10

Gravel Road, Photo by Chelsa YoderAbingdon, VA –Youth musicians from throughout Southwest Virginia will be featured at the 3rd Annual Crooked Road Youth Music Festival on Saturday, May 10th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Heartwood in Abingdon. 25 bands will perform on two stages throughout the day, and an “Old Time Square Dance” will take place inside Heartwood from 5-7 p.m. The square dance will feature Shawn Brenneman, caller, and The Lee Highway String Band.

Albert Hash Memorial BandAbingdon, VA -- The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail presents a Youth Music Performance Series concert on Thursday, November 14th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Heartwood: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Gateway in Abingdon, Virginia. The concert will feature the Albert Hash Memorial Band Program. The Albert Hash Memorial Band Program, directed by Emily Spencer, is an in-school traditional music program at Grayson County High School and Grayson Highlands School. This unique music program has its roots in the mountain music program that was started at Mt. Rogers Combined School in Whitetop, Virginia in 1982.

The concert will feature the Mountain Music School Stringband. Mountain Empire Community College has long been one of the region’s leading institutions in preserving and promoting traditional mountain arts, crafts, and music. It was nine years ago that their effort to celebrate Old Time music was kicked into high gear with the summer program, Mountain Music School.

Historic 1908 Courthouse JamGrayson County is a place where traditional music seems to bubble up out of every nook and cranny. Places like Fries, Elk Creek, and Independence are synonymous with authentic old time music and the musicians who live there have a tremendous respect for tradition. Travelers along The Crooked Road seeking the authentic old time sounds of the region would do well to visit the Wednesday night old time jam at the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence. At 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 25, 2013, the Historic 1908 Courthouse Jam will be featured at Heartwood in Abingdon as part of The Crooked Road’s popular Venue Showcase music series.

Instrument makers’ shops are a popular hangout for local musicians and a natural place for jamming.

The concert will feature the Tower Street Stringband. The Crooked Road Music Series features youth music performers, as well as showcasing venues of the Crooked Road region. The Crooked Road Music Series at Heartwood to Feature Open Jam

Open JamAt 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 25th, the Willis Gap Community Center Open Jam from Patrick County, Virginia will be the featured Venue Showcase at Heartwood. “As sometimes happens, these Jams grow from modest beginnings,” says Jack Hinshelwood, executive director of The Crooked Road. “This one started back around 1995 when friends of Nellie and Otto Hiatt would gather for music in their home. To accommodate all the folks that wanted to hear and play the music, it was moved to the Community Center but it still retains that welcome to our home atmosphere”.
