Wednesday morning, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced that singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens has been named a MacArthur Fellow. The MacArthur Fellowship, often referred to as a "genius grant," offers an unrestricted $625,000 grant, distributed over five years, to, in the Foundation's words, "individuals who show exceptional creativity in their work and the prospect for still more in the future."

The Park Slope Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Jamboree's Brown Jug Award is the brainchild of James Reams, a bluegrass musician and bandleader for over 20 years, who conceived of it as a way to recognize people in the Northeast whose impact on the music deserved to be honored but who might be less likely to be recognized by national organizations since for some of them, their impact was regional in nature.

The Rural Roots Music Commission was formed a number of years ago, in Iowa, to find a way to honor excelling recording artists who deal with traditional old-time music, and many other traditional rural musical art forms. Since most traditional music genre's have now been locked out of participation at the national level in America, the Rural Roots folks found a way to honor these gifted musicians, vocalists, songwriters, recording artists and small production companies, by honoring them with 'CD of the Year' awards. One of the participants in this rather large 'gathering' of musical genres is Kody Norris of Mountain City, Tennessee.

World-renowned singer/songwriter/entertainer Dolly Parton continues racking up the honors! In 2014, The Recording Academy inducted Parton's self-penned hit "Jolene" into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Donna Ulisse left Raleigh last week named the 2016 International Bluegrass Music Association's Songwriter of the Year. It is an award she had been nominated for the past four years in a row with 2016 making it her fifth nomination. Having never won, it caused her to often joke that she was the IBMA's Susan Lucci, in reference to Lucci going nineteen years before winning an Emmy for best Daytime Soap Actress. When former winner Becky Buller announced the award, she smiled at Ulisse's table and said, "You are no longer the Susan Lucci of this award."

The Grand Master Champion for 2016 is Maddie Denton of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Denton took home $1,200 in cash, a $500 gift certificate courtesy of D’Addario, a Grand Master Fiddler plaque, and will appear on the Grand Ole Opry. The two-day 45th annual Grand Master Fiddler Championship is the nation’s premier championship event held at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville on September 3 and 4, 2016.

Entertainer Randall Franks, of Ringgold, was among the recent honorees at the 42nd annual Atlanta Society of Entertainers Awards receiving the Bluegrass Band of the Year Award with his Georgia Mafia Bluegrass Band. Franks, who is best known as “Officer Randy Goode” from the TV series “In the Heat of the Night,” starred in three TV series and 15 films. Musically, he is recognized as an International Bluegrass Music Museum Legend and Independent Country Music Hall of Fame inductee.
